Mountain Maple (Acer spicatum)

Mountain Maple is a native North American deciduous shrub or small tree commonly found in cool, moist forests and wooded areas. It features attractive green foliage, clusters of small greenish-yellow flowers in spring, and colorful red foliage in fall. Its compact growth makes it an excellent choice for woodland edges, understory plantings, and naturalized landscapes.

Mountain Maple thrives in partial to full shade and prefers moist, well-drained, acidic soils. It is particularly well suited to northern climates and provides valuable cover and food for wildlife.

Uses: Woodland restoration, understory plantings, wildlife habitat, naturalized landscapes, and erosion control.

Growing Conditions: Partial shade to shade; prefers cool, moist, well-drained soil.

Hardiness: USDA Zones 3–7.

An excellent native choice for shaded properties, woodland restoration, and wildlife-friendly plantings in the Upper Midwest.
