Silver Maple (Acer saccharinum)
Silver Maple is a fast-growing native North American shade tree valued for its attractive silvery leaf undersides, spreading canopy, and ability to grow in moist soils. Its deeply lobed leaves provide a distinctive appearance throughout the growing season and turn yellow to golden shades in fall.
Silver Maple grows well in full sun and adapts to a variety of soil conditions, including wet soils and areas near streams and ponds. Its rapid growth makes it a popular choice for quickly establishing shade, although it typically develops a broad root system and brittle branches as it matures.
Uses: Shade, streamside plantings, wildlife habitat, erosion control, and naturalized areas.
Growing Conditions: Full sun to partial shade; tolerates moist soils, periodic flooding, and a range of soil types.
Hardiness: USDA Zones 3–9.
An excellent option for large properties and restoration projects where fast growth and tolerance of wet conditions are important.
